This was a hard couple hours 😉

Those couple of hours felt like a small lifetime, didn’t they? The kind of stretch where time moves strangely—too fast, too slow, all at once—and you’re left holding your breath, trying to stay steady while everything around you feels heavier than it should. You can almost laugh about it now, adding that little wink 😉 to soften the edges, but in the moment, it was tough. Really tough. Maybe Grandpa was confused, restless, or emotional. Maybe he kept asking the same questions over and over, or maybe he wanted to get up when his body wasn’t ready. Maybe he didn’t understand why he couldn’t go somewhere or do something he used to do so easily. Watching someone you love struggle—especially someone who once seemed unshakable—pulls at your heart in ways that are hard to explain. And being the one who has to stay calm, patient, and comforting… that isn’t easy. You probably tried everything—soft words, gentle hands, redirection, reassurance. Maybe he needed help settling, maybe he wanted to go home, or maybe he was caught in a loop of memories that wouldn’t let him rest. Those moments feel endless, like you’re carrying both your own emotions and his at the same time. There’s love in every attempt to soothe him, but there’s exhaustion too—the kind you only feel when you’re caring for someone deeply. And yet, you did it. You stayed. You navigated the confusion, the frustration, the repetition, the fear. You didn’t walk away even when you felt overwhelmed. That’s what love looks like in its rawest form—messy, emotional, patient, determined. Caring for an aging parent or grandparent requires a strength that most people don’t see: the emotional endurance, the steady voice, the soft touch, the deep breath before trying again. When those hard hours finally pass and Grandpa settles, you’re left with a mix of relief, gratitude, and quiet sadness. Relief that the moment is over. Gratitude that he’s calm again. And sadness, because every difficult stretch reminds you that life is changing, and you’re learning to meet those changes with grace. So yes, it was a hard couple of hours—but you handled it with love. And that matters more than anything. You’re doing an incredible job, even when the moments feel overwhelming. And sometimes, adding a little wink 😉 is your way of saying, “We made it through. Somehow, we always do.”
