What Is Diabetic Foot? Diabetic foot is a serious complication of diabetes that involves damage to the nerves (neuropathy) and poor blood circulation (peripheral artery disease) in the feet. Over time, high blood sugar levels can harm nerves, reducing the ability to feel pain, heat, or injury. This means cuts, blisters, or wounds can go unnoticed, becoming infected and worsening quickly. In addition, reduced blood flow slows healing and weakens the immune response. When left untreated, diabetic foot ulcers or infections can become so severe that they may lead to gangrene or even amputation.
